It was the morning’s first tea break. We just stepped outside the stuffy lecture room for a breath of fresh air. It was while the tea, coffee and biscuits were being served that the banter started. Apparently two of the participants had been a long time friends and they got themselves into the memory lane while I and others spent time making polite introductions.
By the time we got to the lunch break we were all like long lost friends in a big annual reunion while in fact we were all perfect strangers that morning till the continuing education course had started. It was while we were busy discussing what we had learned in the morning session when the attention of the group shifted to one of the gloomier of the two old friends. Her friend was pestering her to come off her gloomy mood and asking her as to what was at the root of it when Miss Gloomy relented and started coming off with what was bugging her from inside. As she emptied here mind she became lesser gloomy and actually started becoming livelier.
Once the entire group sensed that Miss Gloomy had a spicier and juicier gossip to offer all ears suddenly tuned into Radio Gloomy.
It seems she was recounting a story when she had recently attended a lecture along with her dentist husband. The lecture had a case presentation by one top notch well acclaimed speaker. The topic had been about Restoration of Smile with Aesthetic Ceramic restorations including anterior ceramic laminates and metal free crowns. As she recounted the story in detail she narrated to her friend how the speaker had in fact shown a case with multiple slides and pictures from every angle including mixing of materials, soft tissue management, Impression techniques and temporization, Shade selection, the various trial steps till the delivery of the restorations and follow up pictures. The complete presentation was full of the pictures of the case.
We were shamelessly eavesdropping on a conversation of which we were not originally a part of. All of us had a big question mark on our faces. Well why does an aesthetic dentistry lecture make the doctor Gloomy. One of us even accosted her with the query “What’s it got to do with your mood?” She didn’t seem to mind the uninvited guests into her discussion. That happens often in these lunch/tea time discussions. Even personal discussions become public discussions in time.
As if she read the expressions on our faces keeping her continuous watch on them least she missed any potential expression of surprise from our faces when she said “While the case was being shown I was shocked by the uncanny resemblance the case had with one of my own recently concluded cases. Same materials, same picture angles, same sequence of pictures and same emphasis as well as same material and tissue management photos. I even stood up and asked some stupid questions and made him, the speaker, go back and forth on some previous slides and asked him details of some previous slides and materials and techniques. He gave perfectly convincing answers about what the patient’s original complaints were and how he went about managing the case at every step.”
“In some time I and my husband were convinced that the case in question was not a similar case but were in fact my case. Yes my very own case!”
